Obsidian DPS About Us

My name is Daniel Jessee and I am the creator for Obsidian DPS. I have been an avid TTRPG enthusiast for most of my adult life. Truth be told my favorite TTRPG is D&D and I have played it since the 3.5e days (took a hiatus through 4e) and picked up 5/5.5e which I am currently the DM for 2 groups; 1 in person at a local game shop and one online. I have also played Shadow Run and Warhammer 40k, my army was Necrons.

I am also a content creator and a game designer. I began creating D&D adventures publishing them in DMsGuild and had 2 adventures out when the OGL crisis happened. I was about to publish my 3rd adventure when that happened and made a decision to no longer create D&D adventures and began looking for other TTRPG's. What I found was systems that did not allow third party content and others that had mechanics I did not like. I did notice some mechanics I did like in most every system. If you look hard enough, you will see inspiration from many popular TTRPG's.

Where Obsidian DPS began was when I saw parallels between dice pool mechanics and percentile dice mechanics. After playing with these parallels in a spreadsheet I was able to build the combat engine with a realization that the type of dice to use for the dice pool is limited by design choice more than a mechanics choice. I chose 6 sided dice or d6's, to form the dice pools for the core system but left rules for changing them to d4's, d8's d10's and d12's. Technically you could even use d20's for the dice pool if you wanted to!

I have been working on Obsidian DPS since October of 2023 and am happy that now I can give it to the world.
